How to Get from Da Nang to Hoi An (Oct 2026): Prices, Times & Why to Stay Overnight

Xin Chào! I'm Meg from ít ít Việt Nam.

You've landed at Da Nang Airport, and now it's on to Hội An.
With so many ways to get there, it's easy to get stuck on "Which one is right for me?"

This guide breaks down how to get from Da Nang Airport and Da Nang city to Hội An by estimated price, travel time, and who each option suits best.

The short version: three rules of thumb.

  • Lots of luggage, or you want a comfortable ride → Grab or a pre-booked transfer
  • Watching your budget, with time to spare → shared shuttle
  • Traveling light and solo → bike taxi

*All figures are estimates as of October 2026. They vary by time of day, weather, and operator.

What You'll Learn in This Guide

  • The distance from Da Nang Airport and the city to Hội An, plus the price and travel time for each option
  • How to choose the option that suits you
  • Why we recommend staying overnight in Hội An rather than making a day trip
  • How to get around once you arrive (the Ancient Town is mostly for pedestrians)

Getting from Da Nang to Hoi An: Each Option Explained

The distance is about 30 km from Da Nang Airport and Da Nang Station to Hội An, and about 25 km from My Khê Beach. From a hotel in Da Nang city, it varies with your starting point, so check the estimate in the app.

1. Grab (Ride-Hailing App)

Scooters lined up on a Vietnamese street corner, each with a Vietnamese flag on its handlebars

💰Estimated price: 4-seater 250,000–350,000 VND / 7-seater 350,000–450,000 VND
⏱️Travel time: 40–60 min
👤Best for: People with lots of luggage, and anyone who wants to settle on a price before getting in

Seeing the price in the app before you ride is the biggest reassurance. From Da Nang Station, expect around 280,000–380,000 VND, and prices can run higher during rush hour.

⚠️Things to watch for
- Booking before you leave the airport arrivals floor makes things smoother.
For that, get your mobile data sorted first, with a local SIM card or an eSIM.
I've covered how to use the apps in my guide to the essential apps and tools for Vietnam.
- Before you get in, take a photo of the car and its license plate, check the driver's rating, and confirm the destination and a fixed price. These three basics also come up in 6 Real-World Tips for Visiting Da Nang and Hội An.

2. Metered Taxi (Mai Linh, Vinasun, etc.)

💰Estimated price: 300,000–450,000 VND (the upper limit differs depending on the source)
⏱️Travel time: 40–60 min
👤Best for: People who don't want to use an app, or can't

The fare is metered, so it changes with traffic. For airport taxis, there's information that paying by card adds 3%, so it's reassuring to carry a little cash.

⚠️Things to watch for
- If a "fixed price" offered by someone approaching you in the airport arrivals hall is far above the estimates above, politely decline and compare it with the price in the app.
- Green "Xanh SM" taxis also run here, but I couldn't confirm their fare table for Hội An or their pick-up point at the airport in this article. Go by the price shown in the app.

3. Pre-Booked Transfer (Hotel Pickup or Private Car)

💰Estimated price: 270,000–500,000 VND
⏱️Travel time: 45–60 min
👤Best for: Late or early arrivals, families with small children, and anyone who wants a guaranteed pickup

The biggest advantage is that you don't have to look for a car after you land. If you're traveling with kids and a lot of luggage, this packing list for traveling in Vietnam with kids may help too.

If you booked your hotel on Booking.com, a transfer discount may apply, and it can sometimes come out cheaper than Grab.

⚠️Things to watch for
- Prices vary widely by vehicle type and operator, so when you book, confirm what the price includes and where you'll meet.

4. Shared Shuttle

💰Estimated price: 130,000–150,000 VND per seat
⏱️Travel time: 60–75 min
👤Best for: People who want to keep costs down, and those with time to spare

The shuttle stops at several hotels before heading out, so it takes longer than a taxi.

⚠️Things to watch for
- Operating hours and pick-up points differ by operator. Confirm them when you book.

5. Bike Taxi (Grab Bike, etc.)

💰Estimated price: 120,000–180,000 VND
⏱️Travel time: 40–50 min
👤Best for: Solo travelers packing light, with just a backpack

⚠️Things to watch for
- Not suitable for suitcases.
- You'll be riding in the rain or strong sun, so on days when the weather looks like it might turn, another option is safer.

How Long Will It Take? Rain and Rush Hour Add Time

It's usually 40–60 minutes, but around 5 p.m. it can take about an hour, and up to around 75 minutes in rush hour. Some sources say heavy rain in the rainy season (September–December) can push it to around 90 minutes or more.

If you have a fixed flight or tour time that day, plan for up to 90 minutes to give yourself some breathing room.

October to December is the rainy period. According to the Associated Press (October 9), flooding and landslides hit Da Nang on October 8, with water waist-deep in some places. I couldn't confirm the impact on Hội An's Ancient Town at the time of writing.

Typhoons can also disrupt things around the airport. During a typhoon in September 2025, Da Nang Airport stopped handling flights for several hours in the morning. On rough-weather days, check the latest news with your hotel and your ride-hailing app before you head out.

Staying Overnight in Hoi An Beats a Day Trip

My personal recommendation is definitely to stay overnight.
Start with one night, and if you can, stay a few.

Hội An is famous as the city of lanterns, but it also has rice paddies and beaches.
There are plenty of activities and great restaurants, too.
That's exactly why it would be a waste to stay only in Da Nang.

You may be thinking, "Isn't a day trip enough?"
But the trip is usually 40–60 minutes each way. Round trip, that's about an hour and a half to two hours just getting around, and rain or rush hour can stretch it further.
The good thing about staying overnight is that you can spend that time in Hội An instead.

What You Can Do When You Stay

  • See the Ancient Town at night with its lanterns lit, and visit the night market
  • Stop worrying about the ride back and the traffic
  • Enjoy the lovely morning scenery of blue sky against yellow walls
  • Browse cafés and shops at a relaxed pace while the town is quiet

If you want to catch the monthly lantern festival (the Full Moon Festival), aim for the 14th day of the lunar calendar.
For the rest of 2026, most sources list October 23, November 22, and December 22.
Some sources are off by a day or two, though, so check just before you go.
I also couldn't confirm in this article whether it goes ahead in bad weather.

When a Day Trip Works Better

  • You're based in Da Nang and have other plans on your itinerary
  • Seeing Hội An's lanterns is enough for you, and you'd rather spend the rest of your time at a beach resort
  • You want to leave your luggage at your Da Nang hotel and travel light

Either way, the rainy season is a time when plans change easily. In 2025, the Ancient Town flooded widely in late October, and in November a third flood in three weeks was reported. In some cases, attractions were closed and ticket sales were halted. If you stay overnight, a flexible booking gives you peace of mind. I've also covered choosing where to stay in 6 Real-World Tips for Visiting Da Nang and Hội An.

If you're torn, start with one night. You'll have time to enjoy Hội An after dark, too.

The Ancient Town Is Mostly for Pedestrians

The Ancient Town is an area for pedestrians and non-car vehicles, and cars can't enter.
If you take a Grab, you'll be dropped at one of the Ancient Town's many entrances and have to walk in yourself.

About Ancient Town Entry Tickets

Visiting the Ancient Town requires a paid ticket. Sources differ on whether tickets are checked when you're simply walking the streets. Check the latest conditions at a ticket booth near an entrance.

Visiting the ít ít Việt Nam Hội An Store

The Japanese Covered Bridge is a landmark many people use to get their bearings in the Ancient Town.
